Top Home Design Decor 2021

Sometimes being stuck indoors for long periods of time can be nice and relaxing; after a while, we go stir crazy. It also appears that the more time we spend in our home the more things we would like to change. While you survive the long Michigan winter, why not explore some of the 2021 home design trends that you might want to consider to turn your home into your cold weather oasis.

Color

The 2021 Pantone colors of the year are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (“a vibrant yellow”).

“The union of enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit.” – Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

As the leading trend setter in color, Pantone influences  fashion, furniture, accessory, and appliance industries. They pay close attention  as they plan their newest designs and creations. Do you love gray? Yellow? Be on the lookout for all kinds of items being created in that trendy color. While you are at it, why not shop at these Grand Rapids, locally-owned small business shops like Reinspired Treasures or the larger design store The Home Studio to find some ways to dress up and destroy the winter blues with some illuminating yellow accessories.

Design

Bold patterns and forms are the trend in 2021. Since 2020 gave us little to celebrate, this year designers are going for whimsical and delightful free form patterns that bring joy and vibrance to a space. Check out the work of pattern maker Sarah Jane Woodward! Lighten your living space or your remote work area with some curvy and cool furniture or the addition of some funky patterned pillows. Along with those bold shapes, designers expect an upsurge in all things organic, including patterns of flowers or  tropical leaves. Designer Angie Hranowsky, predicts this year will have a 70’s vibe with a bohemian feel and certainly some fringe.

Flooring and tile

Like the accessories and design trends, many of this year’s trending floor and tile choices will be vibrant and bold or on the other end of the spectrum earthy, organic, environmentally friendly, and most importantly, low maintenance. Check out the latest trends at Complete Flooring and Interiors and Floor Coverings International of Grand Rapids.

Carpet will continue to downtrend in 2021. Homeowners want surfaces that are more environmentally friendly and that can handle the wear and tear of many little and big feet. Tile designers again are following the trend and creating patterns and designs that add a little whimsy and fun to a home. Check out these patterns sold at Home Depot.

Some are even doing a little of both. A combination of organic wood with cool and interesting tile certainly makes a statement in a room. Wouldn’t you agree?

Whether you follow the home design trends in 2021 doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that you consider making  your living and work spaces as comfortable and as enjoyable as possibly. Why? Because you survived 2020, you deserve it!
