Buying or selling a home can be stressful–the remedy? SELF CARE

If you are considering selling your home or in the process of looking for a new place to settle, it can be a very stressful and unsettling time. It is often indicative of a big change in your life. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make the whole process a lot smoother and a whole lot less stressful, and it’s called self care!

Get a 616 Realty agent

The first thing is to find a realtor that you can share and express the range of emotions and the stressors you are experiencing in this time of uncertainty. Take the time to talk to a few realtors until you find the best fit. It is like meeting someone you feel like you have known your whole life–instant chemistry and compatibility. Interview them and ask them some of the questions that are most important to you. Having the right realtor during this time is one of the best self care tips we can give you.

Make sleep a priority

Secondly, get some sleep. Sleep seems to be the remedy for whatever ails us, but it often ranks lowest on the priority list. If we have things to do and not enough time in the day to do them, we often skip sleep. This can be very detrimental to all areas of your life. Your physical wellness can be impacted when your body doesn’t get the rest time it needs to repair and heal itself. Not getting enough sleep leads to bad habits like not exercising and eating poorly, or not eating at all. These can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, stroke. Likewise, not getting enough sleep will impact your mental health. People who don’t get enough sleep (7-9 hours a night for adults) are more prone to irritability, anxiety, mood swings, and bouts of depression. If you aren’t feeling like yourself, try making sleep a priority and see how that one small change impacts everything else in your life.

Exercise

Exercise is of course one of the best self care things you can do for so many reasons. While you are looking to buy or sell your home, your cortisol levels will naturally rise. With exercise, you can lower those levels. Likewise, exercise will help release any tension that has developed in your muscles. It will increase positive endorphins that can help change your perspective, from stressful to doable, and it will help your physical health while you are at it. Exercise doesn’t have to mean the gym, exercise equipment and videos, and endless weight room workouts. Try a form of exercise that you haven’t ever done before. Maybe try one that is both family oriented and fun. The Blandford Nature Center will teach you how to snowshoe and cross country ski. How about trying some fat tire biking at Cannonsburg, or even better, jump on some downhill skis. And while you’re at it, take the kids sledding. Getting up that hill is a worthy workout and the reward is a fun and exhilarating ride down!

Meditation

Everyone is talking about meditation because mediation is a way to bring ourselves back to a calm, present-centered, awake state of being. When we have stress in our lives, like moving or selling our home, we have a tendency to go into autopilot, to avoid the stress and actually avoid the parts of life we don’t want to deal with. It’s human nature to desire the path of least resistance. Unfortunately, it has us going through life like zombies instead of milking the heck out of this one life we have. Meditation allows you to focus your mind, release the past and the future, and be aware of your goals and purpose for today. It allows you to be present in the 24 hour period where anything can happen. Eat Well

At 616 Realty, we understand that eating well is very difficult when you are in a rush, stressed, overworked, and trying to sell your home or making the biggest purchase of your life. The best way to ensure that you eat well is to plan ahead. Plan for larger evening meals that have your servings of protein and good greens and colorful veggiesl Then your healthy lunch for the next day is already prepared. Making easy transportable breakfasts like egg muffins on the weekends will get your morning started with something healthy that you can easily grab and go. And, pack a plant-based protein shake for a midday snack that will keep you full until dinner!

Whether or not you are buying or selling your home, or you are just dealing with the uncertainty in today’s world, keeping self-care at the forefront is important to your health and well-being and certainly a key to the type of experiences you are going to have.  So…give yourself permission to sleep a little more, drink a little less (or whatever vice you might have), exercise when you can, meditate often, and ask for help from your real estate agent!
