Is there a complete list of terms or phrases that should be avoided when writing listing comments?

There isn’t a list, but our advisors at the Fair Housing Center recommend describing the property and its amenities rather than the type of person(s) who might find it appealing. Since many industry terms could refer to a protected class (race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, familial status, disability, marital status, and age), you might consider suggestions like those referenced below when creating listing remarks: • Rather than referring to a great ‘family’ home, instead describe the features that would make it attractive to someone with a large family (i.e. 5 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, fenced rear yard, large dining room, lots of storage space, etc.). • Rather than saying that a home is great for ‘empty nesters’ (which could relate to familial status and age), instead indicate that the home is maintenance and barrier free, has a main floor primary bedroom and a main floor laundry, has an attached garage, etc. • Rather than promoting as a property that would be great for the outdoorsman, instead promote that it is situated on 10 wooded acres, has a pond, has a large pole building with heat and electricity, etc.
